Darren and Eileen were born exactly a year apart to Edgar and Argine Eicheln, two loving and devoted parents. They had a lovely childhood--never wanting for resources or affection. Life was rocked by the inexplicable disappearance of their father around the age of six, but the gap was filled in almost seamlessly by long-time family friend and father-figure Andrew. Somehow, things were indesctructable, even in the face of hardship and struggles.
But every origin story involves a tragic kick-off.
Darren was just twelve and Eileen just eleven when their parents were murdered. Argine was dragged off, screaming, presumed dead; Andrew was slaughtered in front of them. The children stayed silent, frozen under the bed until the police arrived. Darren's heart was broken. Eileen's mind was shattered. The still silent children were carted off to their nearest relations to recover.
It started something.
As the pair got shuffled from home to home, raised in part by a veritable 52 card pick up of actual relatives and concerned family friends, a few things crystallized. Darren was in charge; Eileen was his shadow. Darren could speak to adults; Eileen could smile at adults. Darren was using advanced physics to build paper airplanes; Eileen was locking doors from across the room with her mind.
The night of their parents' murder manifested very different strengths in the two. Both were incredibly bright, incredibly capable, easily lapping up the knowledge and skills their motley crew of guardians imparted to them. But Eileen's mind was a more fluid place, the sort of place that could reach out and alter the world around it, a slow but steady manifestation of the tele-two (telepathy and telekinesis). Darren's was sharper, more analytical, always on top of hiding his sister's difference all the way up to the point of presenting her with a mask to wear.
One that matched his own.
Darren has gadgets; Eileen has her mind. Darren plays their father's successor; Eileen plays the debutant. Darren is going to save the world; Eileen is going to ensure he does.
